The Tradeoffs of a Freelancing Career

Freelancing has become a popular trend these days. In fact, a lot of people leave their corporate jobs for freelancing careers. I can’t help but wonder, is it really worth leaving a stable job for a more flexible work schedule? What is it exactly about freelancing careers that attract so many individuals to give up their lives in the corporate world?

Well, just like everything else, a freelancing career has its pros and cons. It would be really helpful to take note of them just in case you decide to let go of your job and switch to some freelance work.

Flexible Schedule

To start with, freelancers have full control of their so-called work time. It is the flexibility of the work schedule that makes people want to go freelance. Unlike in the corporate world where employees have to stick to a strict schedule, freelancing jobs don’t require an early time in and a late time out.

You can start your work anytime of the day, provided that you finish everything on time and meet strict deadlines. If you want to advance in the field of freelancing, you need to be professional and maintain proper conduct when dealing with clients. It is necessary to deliver your work and projects on time.

Keep in mind that being able to meet strict deadlines will serve as the backbone of your freelancing career. Without this quality, your career is as good as dead. Let’s face it, who would dare hire you if you can’t meet due dates and deadlines? This kind of irresponsible trait could jeopardize your client’s business.

Working as a freelancer will definitely hone your multi-tasking skills. You can mix business with pleasure. For instance, you can go on a vacation yet still continue to work on a project that you are tasked to finish. All you need is your laptop and you’re good to go.

Freedom To Choose The Projects You Want To Work On

The greatest advantage of freelancing is the freedom to choose the kind of work you want to take. You get to choose the projects that you want to work on based on your hobbies and interests. Simply stated, there are a lot of work options to choose from.

Needless to say, one of the drawbacks of having a corporate job is the fact that you are confined to specific and repetitive chores. Sometimes, all the office work gets too mechanical and boring. This is probably one of the reasons why some people opt to leave their jobs and start hunting for some freelance work.

Pick Who You Want To Work With

One of the perks of a freelance career is being able to choose who you work with. If you’re a freelancer, you don’t have to worry about cranky or snooping office mates, and you don’t have to put up with megalomaniac bosses and overly envious co-workers who seem to monitor your every move. What’s great about freelancing is that there’s no office drama to face at all.

No Required Stationary Office

Another good thing about freelancing is the frequent change of venue. It is not necessary to go to a specific place for work, unlike in corporate jobs where you are required to report to the office every single day.

It’s very liberating to get to choose where you work. You can stay at home if you feel like it or you can head to the nearest coffee shop or you can even go out-of-town and bring your work with you. As I have mentioned earlier, you can go on a vacation and still manage to work on the current project you have.

No Financial Stability

One of the downsides of a freelancing career is the instability of finances. What exactly does this mean? Well, unlike in corporate jobs where there’s a guarantee that you will be receiving a fixed monthly pay, this is not the case in freelance work.

Your income is usually inconsistent because it will all depend on the amount of work you’ve done throughout the entire work week or month. The more projects you finish, the higher your income will be. In other words, the amount of money you will be receiving is dependent on the amount of work you’ve finished.

Working harder and finishing more projects will definitely increase your earnings. However, if spells of laziness visits you, don’t be surprised if your income drops in a jiffy.

Inconsistency of Incoming Work

Another drawback of freelancing is the inconsistency of incoming work. In this field, you have to find work on your own because there is no guarantee that you will have a job once the project you’ve been working on has come to an end. It’s really up to you to find new clients.

You will need to hunt for work every now and then to ensure that you won’t be jobless after your present contract has ended, unlike in corporate jobs where your workload is guaranteed.

Freelancing Career VS Corporate Jobs

It all boils down to one thing. Freelancing is all about freedom but this freedom comes with a price. It’s true that you are free to choose when, where and what to work on but you also have to remember the fact that instability and inconsistency will always follow. Basically, it’s like choosing between freedom and stability. With this being said, I leave the verdict to you.
