27 Firefox Addons For Power Blogging

These plug-ins are for the blogger who knows exactly what he or she needs to get the job done quick and efficiently. Helping to automate certain tasks is a must when deadlines are looming and with these Firefox add ons you will do just that. This list also serves as a great way for casual bloggers to find new techniques that may turn one into a power blogger.

A common misconception for site users is that the author of any random article basically just records his or her thoughts on a topic and publishes it to the site. To some that’s all there is but if you want traffic and maybe eventually become an authority in a particular area then the steps can pile up. The actual fact is blogging requires a lot of steps in order to be successful and some of these include: choosing a niche, planning for an article, researching the topic, subscribing to RSS feeds, keyword planning, SEO management, image editing, writing, marketing of articles, and responding to the various comments. Yeah, it can be a lot of work so let’s take a look at some add ons that can ease the stress load a little.

Adblock Plus

Ever been annoyed by all those ads and banners on the internet that often take longer to download than everything else on the page? Install Adblock Plus now and get rid of them.

Autofill Forms

Autofill Forms enables you to fill out web forms with one click or a keyboard shortcut.

Brief makes reading RSS feeds as easy and intuitive as it gets. Designed to have exactly the right set of features, it is powerful and simple at the same time. Feeds are presented on a seamless, interactive page which let’s you bookmark and tag items with a single click.

Advanced Eyedropper, ColorPicker, Page Zoomer and other colorful goodies. Have you ever had to compress an image for the web but once placing it against the bg color, realize the two colors no longer match. For me it’s easiest to use this plug-in to see what the image color changed to and adjust as needed. This is good stuff!

CustomizeGoogle is a Firefox extension that enhances Google search results by adding extra information (like links to Yahoo, Ask.com, MSN etc) and removing unwanted information (like ads and spam). All features are optional and easily configured.

DownThemAll is all you can desire from a download manager: it features an advanced accelerator that increases speed up to 400% and it allows you to pause and resume downloads at any time.
DownThemAll is fast, reliable and easy-to-use! It lets you download all the links or images contained in a webpage and much more: you can refine your downloads by fully customizable criteria to get only what you really want!

Download Statusbar

Despite its compact size, Download Statusbar packs in more useful features than the standard download window. The fully customizable interface auto-hides when not in use, allowing full control without interruption.

Dummy Lipsum

Generate “Lorem Ipsum” dummy text (from http://www.lipsum.com). Minimum text length: 5 words. Context menu option on form inputs (“Insert Dummy Lipsum”). This option fills automatically the selected field.

Firebug integrates with Firefox to put a wealth of development tools at your fingertips while you browse. You can edit, debug, and monitor CSS, HTML, and JavaScript live in any web page. This is a must have if you do any coding at all. I can’t imagine not having it.

Along with transferring your files quickly and efficiently, FireFTP also includes more advanced features such as: directory comparison, syncing directories while navigating, SFTP, SSL encryption, search/filtering, integrity checks, remote editing, drag & drop, file hashing, and much more!

Adds the ability to capture web pages (take screenshot of entire of visible part), edit it, add annotations and upload to free screenshot hosting, save (PNG, GIF, JPEG, BMP), print (NEW!) copy to clipboard, send to external editor or e-mail it.

Font Finder

Simply highlight a single element (e.g. a paragraph or a strong tag ), right-click and select `Font Finder`, then marvel as the full CSS text styling of the selected element appears.

Gmail Manager

Manage multiple Gmail accounts and receive new mail notifications. Also, allows you to view account details including unread messages, saved drafts, spam messages, labels with new mail, space used, and new mail snippets. As far as I know this is the only way to manage multiple gmail accounts. This is a better option for me than having it all forward etc.

KGen (Keyword Generator) is an extension that allows you to see what keywords are strong on visited web pages. Than, you can retrieve them for social sharing (tag filling) or webmastering/SEO.

Draw out a ruler to get the pixel width and height of any elements on a webpage.

Allow active content to run only from sites you trust, and protect yourself against XSS and Clickjacking attacks.

This extension gives you the ability to close all tabs, while opening another one that will make it look like you are doing what you should be doing. It was break time right?

Allows quick enable and disable of Java and Javascript from statusbar.

ReminderFox displays and manages lists of date-based reminders and ToDo’s. ReminderFox does not seek to be a full-fledged calendar. In fact, the target audience is anybody that simply wants to remember important dates (birthdays, anniversaries, bills, etc) without having to run a whole calendar application. ReminderFox makes sure you remember all of your important dates via easy-to-use lists, alerts, and alarm notifications.

SEO Quake

Seoquake is a Mozilla Firefox SEO extension aimed primarily at helping web masters who deal with search engine optimization (SEO) and internet promotion of web sites. Seoquake allows you to obtain and investigate many important SEO parameters of the internet project under study on the fly, save them for future work, compare them with the results, obtained for other, competitive, projects.

If you use one or more sites like Facebook, Twitter, Gmail, LinkedIn, etc to share you’ll love having Shareaholic by your side. Shareaholic makes sharing online better, faster & easier.

Browse faster by speeding up common tasks – faster downloading, searching, visiting favorites, copy & paste, and more.

Tab Mix Plus

Tab Mix Plus enhances Firefox’s tab browsing capabilities. It includes such features as duplicating tabs, controlling tab focus, tab clicking options, undo closed tabs and windows, plus much more. It also includes a full-featured session manager.

TwitterFox is a Firefox extension that notifies you of your friends’ status on Twitter. It’s all about muti-tasking and now you can tweet and blog at the same time. Now that’s is what I call power blogging!

URL Fixer

URL Fixer corrects typos in URLs that you enter in the address bar. For example, if you type google.con, it will correct it to google.com (asking first, if you enable confirmation). This version will correct common misspellings of .com, .net, .org, .edu, .gov, .mil, and all other mainstream TLDs, as well as the protocol (http:, https:).

Xmarks (formerly Foxmarks)

Xmarks is the #1 bookmarking add-on. Install it on all your computers to keep your bookmarks and (optionally) passwords backed up and synchronized. Xmarks also helps you uncover the best of the web based on what millions of people are bookmarking.

We will also suggest you try one experimental Addon:

Be in control of which cross-site requests are allowed. Improve the privacy of your browsing by not letting other sites know your browsing habits. Secure yourself from Cross-Site Request Forgery (CSRF) and other attacks.

What does this have to do with blogging?

  • Austin Gulati

Only like three of these are related to blogging…?

  • @gus81 I'm not familiar with apture but will definitely check it out.
@Phat-Jay I actually use Web Developer and should have added that to this list.
@ brantchoate and @Austin Gulati The reason I used the term “Power Blogging” is because most of these plug-ins would be used for those designing the blogs theme, promoting, marketing, tracking, and automating some of the common tasks that most casual bloggers would not need.

  • Congratulations for the new site.
    Nice design.
Good luck in this new project

  • beesjournal

  • snipergirl

bah! none of these are specific to blogging at all!

I mean, I agree with having firebug there, for example, however, adblock?! download status bar?! they might be awesome, but they're not exactly “blogging power tools”

    How about scribefire or zemanta?

  • Firebug has to be the most useful of this list. Generally I think it's the most powerful add-on for Firefox.
Didn't know about some of these, thanks for the list.
What add-on do you personally use most?

  • philivey

I would never use the Gmail addon since you can never know where this sensitive data (User/Pass) is going.
