Sharing is Caring
  • Martin McHugh

Waste of time and money. A cutesy business card never won anybody any business. Just like all the sad wannabe logo designers out there. Get a life.

    • David Wieland

I take it Mr McHugh isn’t a graphic designer, or active anywhere near the graphic sector. In this particular field one must demonstrate the very thing he does: visually communicate their skills. Additionally, the unique visual identity is the one trademark that separates an entrepreneur and individualist from the herd, Mr Hugh, that very herd that you so longingly pine for.

I’m not saying these are all brilliant demonstrations of skill and creativity — in fact i’ve seen a lot better — but the fact remains that these individuals are, in fact, very much alive, and living it within the extents of their own creativity, which I can’t say for you, Mr Hugh. With all due respect for whatever pencil pushing job you’re doing which I’m sure must be very exciting.

    • Cat

Oh grumpus wumpus Martin, how wrong you are! My $3.34/piece business cards have netted me hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of business. They’re standouts and people are always intrigued, always remember me and they call me to do work for them. It all start with the card. I’ve been introduced by colleagues as “this is Cat, she’s incredible to work with and you HAVE to see her business card.”

My cards and I billed $1.3 million last year, how ’bout you, Marty? How are those VistaPrint cards working for ya?

      • Clay

        Go Cat Go!!! ;-)

      • Laurie Brown

Now I want to see your card Cat!

      • Beth Terry

But Cat – you aren’t giving yourself any credit. Was it YOU who won the business or was it your card? Sure, they might remember your card. Big whoop. But if you have no juice behind that card, your card’s cuteness isn’t getting you the business.

Personally, I’m amused by cute cards, but then I’m irritated because they are often hard to scan, hard to file, and just make me take an extra step to get the info into my system so I can find them later. Like many business people who travel a lot, I have thousands of contacts and business cards. I need to have a way to find that information digitally quickly. When I’m in Canada and my business card is in my office in the US, that “amazingly creative design” does me no good. If you are going the “interesting” route, may I humbly recommend that you add a QR code for us who need the digital info. If we can scan that, then we won’t be mumbling under our breath at you whilst trying to get that data into our contact management systems.

I think it can be useful to have a few “interesting” cards on hand to give out – things like those miniature books that have a detachable business card and QR code — but we also don’t want to cost our intended clients any more irritation or time than necessary. So it depends on what you do for a living and it depends on your target audience.

I vote for having both types on hand.

      Somebody’s grumpy…

Mr. Wieland put it well. The only thing I can add is that I have also gotten business based on my card and have helped others to do the same.

A biz card may not guarantee you business, but a crap card certainly can lose some for you.

  • Eko – iBrandStudio

Amazing..not square business card as usual.
    Thanks for the inspiration

    • SloDive

      Glad you like it.

  • Shawnish

A cutesy business car never won anybody any business? Sure, with just the card, you won’t buy anything over. But with the whole combination, I think this makes a great first impression. It makes your card stand out from the rest, and people will take a second look.

  • Steven Jones

… networking one cardboard slice at a time.

  • Cardview

This is great inspiration! Thanks :)

A biz card alone won’t get you the biz … it good one, however, reflects your brand. Standing out is always a good thing, as long as it’s on brand. If you’re target is conservative corporate biz, a card that’s too “out there” will be a turnoff. Alternately, if your audience is looking for creativity, this could be the ticket. CAUTION: if a card size is too big, small or oddly shaped, it may make filing difficult and be a headache for the client (word of experience).

  • MarionSpeaks (Marion Grobb Finkelstein)

PS: another important tip for biz cards … do a spell check (unlike my posted comment above … ooops, sorry about that folks.

  • Leanne Hoagland-Smith

Marketing is about attracting attention and these cards do that. Yet, will they begin to build the relationship by having that person ask you this question “Tell me more about what you do?”

Seth Godin defines the word brand about the expectations that your potential target market has about you, your company or your solutions. Your business card should work with at least some of those expectations.
