As the wuthor wanted it to resemble the original crown (today in Vienna, Austria) as good as possible he had to do a lot of research. He started with looking for many reference pictures, mainly detailed photos since they wouldnâ€™t lend the crown to him, he guess. He gathered information on its dimensions and studied all the details of how itâ€™s built which was pretty hard with only blurry references.
In this project author used mainly Zbrush for most of the modelling and all of the sculpting and posing, and author used Never-Centre Silo for much of the hard-edged modelling of several accessories. Finally, the lighting and rendering was done mainly within Zbrush where he exported several layers including lighting layers and special material layers and composited them in photoshop which he also used for the texturing and post-work.
When you think about making something like this in 3d apps like Maya or Max few years ago, it would take three times longer period to get it done, and still wouldnâ€™t look as nice as it looks today. We, who love and live CGI, are lucky to be living in renaissance era of CGI. Itâ€™s on us now to make it memorable by producing great and inspiring imagery for our future ancestors.
