According to Wikipedia “Tilt-shift photography” refers to the use of camera movements on small- and medium-format cameras, and sometimes specifically refers to the use of tilt for selective focus, often for simulating a miniature scene. Sometimes the term is used when the shallow depth of field is simulated with digital postprocessing; the name may derive from the tilt-shift lens normally required when the effect is produced optically.

Three Methods To Produce This Effect

1.) The first method is very simple. If you are a photographer then simply buy a tilt-shift lens. Yes there is a catch. They probably cost more than your camera and if you have a grand or two to spare then go for it. Tilt-Shift Lens for sell.

2.) For method two we can get a little creative and build our own tilt-shift lens. Creative Pro wrote an awesome article a while back on how to make your own here.

3.) Finally for method three we can just skip the lens altogether and worry about creating the effect in the comfort of our own home with Photoshop. Yeah it’s cheating and not a real tilt-shift shot but I won’t tell if you won’t. Let’s take a look and see how this is done.
